Questions Omnibus, Part 2
Questions Omnibus, Part 2 Things are actually pretty calm here in New England, even with the Patriots dynasty-confirming Super Bowl win yesterday. Patriots fans are excited, sure, but the third win in four years for the Pats is nothing compared to the Red Sox first World Series win since the Wilson administration, which caused pandemonium throughout the region. [international readers: youll learn to enjoy baseball and American football, really, but in the meantime feel free to use this posts comments section to talk about international sports: World Cup 2006 predictions, the upcoming India-Pakistan test matches, Six Nations rugby, why people shouldnt cheer for Manchester United, whatever you like] Today I got back to reading domestic applications after spending much of last week reading international applications. Todays applications hailed from Arizona, Texas, Florida, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and New York; about 15 applications so far today, all said. And now, as I write this entry, Im also half-watching one of my ten favorite films of all time: Sneakers. Ive got a weeks worth of questions to catch up on. Ive been writing this entry for a while now and am less than half done, so Ill answer my backlog of questions in several parts. Here goes part 1: Random questions Akash asked a common question: Is it true that Will Smith turned down a scholarship to MIT to pursue his rap career? My understanding, though people express uncertainty, is that it is probably not true, though many publications cite this as a fact. It is a fact that the Fresh Prince is a very bright guy. And as far as scholarships are concerned, MIT was in the 1980s, as it is now, a school that offers only need-based scholarships, so that says more about his familys financial status than anything else. VermontDude asked, Did you perform the removing-your-belt stunt ? Hmm perhaps youre referring to my story about MIT Math Professor Hartley Rogers that I sometimes tell? So, heres the story: my first term at MIT, I had passed out of single variable calculus (18.01) with an AP test, so I could take multivariable calculus (18.02), taught by the legendary math professor Hartley Rogers. Hartley made the phrase intuitively obvious infamous on the MIT campus. He ran for US President in 1992. He has numerous Web shrines in his honor (here and here among others), enshrining some choice quotes. Hartley is in his late 70s. Anyway, were talking about surfaces this one class. Hartley starts getting a bit goofy. Who wants to see a Mobius strip? he says to us, as he begins taking off his belt. Omigosh, we think, hes going to take off his pants and strip. But (Many of you already see where this is going), what he does is simply give his belt a half-twist, and voila! a Mobius strip. Numbers-related questions interested in stats and Kiran both ask for numbers: Do you have any numbers for us yet!! (applied etc.) i was wondering if/when you were going to start posting numbers of how many applicants, how many will be accepted, etc. I still havent seen our final regular action numbers yet, but from all indications, our application numbers will be mostly similar to last years. Id expect that our final number will be somewhere right around 10,500. Ill post more numbers when I can. Kiran also asks, Is it true MIT is aiming for a class of ~950 this year?? and The quota for intls, is it 100 accepted or is MIT hoping for 100 to enroll?? It is true that we are aiming for a smaller class size this year. I dont know what the exact target is, but my understanding is that it is between 950-1000. Also, we aim for 8% internationals in each years class, and traditionally admitting 100 yields about 80 international freshmen each year. Anxiety-related questions Sumith P Mathew writes, Its heart wrenching to wait till mid-March for a decision from MIT. Why does MIT follow the rule that only U.S citizens or permanent residents can only apply for early action at MIT but not International Students? This is a question I answered in this post. The answer was: We only have one round of admissions for international students, during regular action. Given the small number of international students we are allowed to admit each year, it is better for us to compare all of the applications together than to have an early and regular round. Sumith also asks, Everyday I come home from school and bite my nails while I open up the MIT website to find out the latest information about my application. But every time I find that theres nothing new. By now, I have repeated this process a hundred times and Im out of nails. Could you please give me some clue about my application as in if u liked it or something and could you please hurry up your application process? Sumith, we are in the middle of our defined, standard process that brings us from more than 10,000 applicants to 1600 or so admitted students. We take our time with this process because we feel we owe it to each an every applicant to give their application the thorough review it deserves. And, ultimately, weve found that our process works. I know that its a stressful time, waiting for decisions from colleges, but I dont think a few months is too much to ask for a well-thought-out decision. So, relax, enjoy a good book, and youll hear back from US colleges over the nex t couple of months. kate writes, I feel clueless when it comes to objectively accomplishing my lifes goals. I know the starting pointgetting into college, and I know what I want to study when I get there however I feel an overwhelming amount of concern for the options I have been given to choose from. I love brain and cognitive sciences, however very few people offer that as a major and so my question begins. Do you believe that a generalized major which you shape closely to your desired major will suffice? Also, how long does it take to recieve a masters or a doctrates of philosophy from that point. Is it two years per graduate degree? More or Less? And how does MIT feel about accepting graduate students who earned their degree along with their bachelors in four years? How about people who earned a masters unrelated to the Phd they wish to persue? kate, relax about not knowing yet how to accomplish your lifes goals! Youre still young and have lots of time, and there will be many people along the way to help and mentor you. Along those lines, let me answer some of your questions to try to help. If youre interested in becoming a scientific researcher in neuroscience (?), you could go to a well-known for science school with a Brain Cognitive Science major like MIT, but you could also go to a liberal arts college or state school and major in biology. Find a college that is a good match for you; as long as its not, say, an art school, youll find a major that will prepare you well for a research career in brain science. As for graduate school, Id recommend not starting to worry until youre an upperclassperson in college; lots of things can change, and lots of doors can open, in two or three years. But to answer your question, most of my friends who pursued graduate degrees in research science applied from undergraduate (MIT) direct ly to PhD programs (some programs will give you a Masters along the way). PhDs in science can take anywhere from 3-10 years to complete, with 4-6 years being the norm, at least among my friends. For questions on graduate admissions in MIT Brain Cognitive Science, go here; Im not involved in graduate admissions. Regardless, kate, Im confident things will work out for you. Let me know how I can help further. Stuyvesant/Stuyvescant also had some anxious questions. S/he wrote, Not yet applying for colleges or scholarships, still being a lowly sophmore, but id like to know something about my chances; im really good at math;assuming i dont flunk anything ill have taken calculus 1-3 by the time i graduate, as well as 2 years of latin, all required english and soc. studies, a year of computers, physics, chemestry and two years of biology. oh, and im really good at math. my PSAT scores were 99th percentile, but my GPA tends to [not be good] last semester was the first time i broke 3.0, i think. Did i mention the math? understand i have all the competence in varsity athletics as the average dead person, and assuming i do some sort of community service, do you think id have a chance at getting a decent scholarship, or should i start collecting pennies and looking for a refrigerator carton to live under? Its good that as a sophomore youre beginning to think ahead about college, but theres no need to have such anxiety yet. Talk with your parents, teachers, and guidance counselors about your hopes and aspirations. They will be great helpers and mentors along your journey. No one can really predict your chances at MIT or for scholarships (and I wont do that on this blog), but over the next few years with some research youll be able to develop a good list of match and reach schools and some scholarships that might help you pay your way through college. For good information on financial aid, you can check out Daniels blog. Stuyvesant asked further, what sort of a GPA do you need to get into MIT? ive looked all over the stie, and cant find anything- is it a 4.0s only club, do they just care about SAT deals, what? Oh, what about the level o fthe classes your taking? if my math grades arent the best, but im taking a math class more advanced than anyone else in my grade, does that count much in my favor? Stuyvesant , I hope that youll read the MIT Admissions site, and also my older posts in this blog, and Bens blog, and I think youll get a sense of how MITs admissions process works. To directly answer your question: we hope that youll get mostly As, in mostly challenging classes. There is no GPA minimum. Another post coming soon in the meantime, leave your questions or Man U taunts.

For example, the creation of a new free trade agreement among a group of countries may suddenly make a facility located in one of those countries more competitive, because of access for the facility to lower tariff rates within the group. Explain the historical relationships between risk and return for common stock versus corporate bonds. Explain how diversification helps in risk reduction in a portfolio. Support response with actual data and concepts learned in this course. Corporate bonds hold the lowest risk of the two types of investments. The main reason for this is that in the event of bankruptcy, corporate bond holders have a stronger claim to payments than holders of common stock. Common Stock carries the highest risk, because holders are last to be paid in the event of bankruptcy. The risk of investing in a single risky security, such as common stock or corporate bond, is very high due to the company specific risks. Any number of unfortunate events could impact the rate of return. Unsystematic risk can be eliminated by holding a broad portfolio of risky assets; e.g., many different securities in many different industries. The risk that remains after diversifying away unsystematic risk is systematic ri sk. A total stock or bond market fund has systematic risk. This

Small Business and Market Materialism Uber - 1008 Words
Labouring The Walmart Way Wal-Mart is not just the worlds largest retailer. Its the worlds largest company--bigger than ExxonMobil, General Motors, and General Electric. The scale can be hard to absorb. Wal-Mart sold $244.5 billion worth of goods last year. It sells in three months what number-two retailer Home Depot sells in a year. And in its own category of general merchandise and groceries, Wal-Mart no longer has any real rivals.Wal-Mart wields its power for just one purpose: to bring the lowest possible prices to its customers.Deenu Parmar presents the fact as people will still continue shopping at Walmart without being concerned about their policies for their employees.Wal-Mart is a success because it sells products that peopleâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This means that nearly $660,000 in wages is lost annually. Repentance and Journal Article Review Free Essays
In the second article I chose to read, Hall and Fincham (2005) discuss the concept of self-forgiveness. Their analysis seeks to get to the heart of what it means and essentially what it takes to forgive oneself for wrongdoing and reckless abandon. Enright (1996) defines self-forgiveness as ââ¬Å"a willingness to abandon self-resentment in the face of oneââ¬â¢s own acknowledged objective wrong, while fostering compassion, generosity, and love toward oneself. We will write a custom essay sample on Repentance and Journal Article Review or any similar topic only for you Order Now Hall and Fincham (2005) argue that self-forgiveness is an internal and volatile aberration that results in both a retaliatory and benevolent appeal on behalf of the offender. The reason for this is because the offender is in conflict with their ability to do wrong and then compensate with righteous action in rebuttal to their transgression. After the stage of victim identification and reconciliation, avoidance occurs which puts the offender and any sense or notion of wrongdoing they may have had, at peace with themselves (Hall Fincham, 2005).Furthermore, Hall and Fincham (2005) deduce that self-forgiveness does not imply an exemption from heartache, frustration, or regret. The offender will not magically fail to remember or begin to root for such behavior that should lead to another bout with personal disdain and disappointment. In fact, the offender will undergo extensive self-analysis and even consider the implications of interpersonal forgiveness from oneself toward another had they committed a similar offense. Lastly, Hall and Fincham (2005) give attention to the moral aspects of the self-forgiveness concept. According to Horsbrugh (1974) interpersonal forgiveness is bound by biblical scripture which Jesus himself states that ââ¬Å"When you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sinsâ⬠(Mark, 11:25). However, Hall and Fincham (2005) assert that ââ¬Å"self-forgiveness can easily be conditional or impermanent. â⬠A perfect example of the issue about forgiveness would be Michael Vick staring at himself in the mirror after the allegations of masterminding and funding lucrative and horribly tragic dog fighting ring on his personal estate. The interpersonal ability of society to forgive Mick Vick for sponsoring such a deplorable blood sport at the expense of manââ¬â¢s best friend became a national debate that garnered him notoriety unforeseen in sports history. However, if the multitude of saints that denounced Mick Vick had only taken a time-out to reflect on their personal vice, an environment of compa ssion and interpersonal forgiveness could have blossomed, instead of the unforgiving hearts and hypocrisy. On a personal note, I have to consider my own transgressions before I dare judge someone else. Not a single person on this earth possesses the moral immaculateness necessary to judge another human being or the gall to not want to forgive them for wrongdoing. 1 John (1:9-10) states that ââ¬Å"if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. I know that the issue of self-forgiveness is a bit deeper and personal to the point of self-hatred and belief that no amount of prayer can put you back in Godââ¬â¢s good grace. I know this from personal experience and rebuke toward myself for indiscretions that only God almighty knows in complete detail. And with all my grievances and blame placed on God for my trials and tribulations and even minor inconveniences, I have yet to suffer a night without food, shelter, nor clothing.Reflection like this opens your eyes to just how fortunate and blessed all of us sinners are despite our tremendous lack of faith or entitlement. I believe that once a person accepts the necessity of interpersonal forgiveness due to its humbling and sanctif ying power, the key to unlocking the ability to self-forgive will turn up, and open the door to a new outlook on life and unconditional love. Forgiveness is an intangible, deep-rooted, and often faith based conception. Many people seeking interpersonal forgiveness from someone are really seeking closure to the point of getting their mind and personal affairs back in everyday working order. The belief that I canââ¬â¢t sleep at night until I have cleared up a matter between myself and a friend lends credence to the aforementioned statement. The loss of sleep is a result of not having closure from a face to face or heart to heart discourse. However, the concept of self-forgiveness is more about finding personal redemption or liberation from thoughts, feelings, and situations associated with any given transgression (Hall Fincham, 2005).To counsel or console a client or church member in a predicament that involves the forgiveness of a transgression, I would have to be humble and truthful about my own faults and weaknesses. Simply reminding the client about the teachings of Jesus Christ as it relates to forgiveness will not always suffice. I actually strongly believe in mock confrontational platforms in which the transgressor can image and then simulate an encounter with the victim of their wrongdoing.I would play the part of the victim and carry out dual roles of first accepting the offenderââ¬â¢s apology and then rehash the encounter with a deliberate refusal to accept the offenderââ¬â¢s conciliation. Of course, the acceptance of the offenderââ¬â¢s apology in the first scenario will result in instant stress and guilt reduction, but the refusal to accept recompense in the second scenario will reveal the offenders ability to self-forgive and deal with the possibility of delayed or perennial censure. I stated before that the ability to forgive one another grants us humbling and sanctifying powers. Therefore, even after the offender suffers a blow to their constructive self-forgiveness manner, they have not lost the most critical and liberating effect of self-forgiveness because they are at peace with themselves and the higher power in which they confide. Their peace and happiness can live on.References Hall, J. H. , Fincham, F. D. (2005). Self-Forgiveness: The Stepchild of Forgiveness Research. Principles of Management International Economics
Question: Discuss about thePrinciples of Managementfor International Economics. Answer: Introduction The assignment concentrates n the benefits of free trade along with the concept that it holds which helps the organisation in obtaining the competitive advantage. Free trade is regarded as the trading that is conducted by the countries to import or export of goods without any charge of tariffs and quotas and any other restrictions. Thus, free trade helps the organisation along with the stakeholders to gain the extra profit that is received from the selling of the goods to the customers. Thus, in free trading, the buyers and the sellers carry out the trading activity over different countries without the applying of tariffs and quotas that help in reducing the price of the products that are being sold. The Transpacific agreement is taken into consideration in this assignment where there are various pros and cons that are discussed which would help to provide an idea of the benefit as well as the problem free trading create (Anderson, J.E. and Yotov, 2016). On the other hand, the free trade further helps the organisation to receive the satisfaction of the customers, and hence the customers are prone to more purchasing of product from the respective organisation thereby increasing the profit percentage of the organisation. On the other hand, the assignment also consists of the pros and the cons that are associated with the free trade such that it provides a benefit to the organisation thereby sharing a good relation with the stakeholders along with the employees and the customers. The assignment focuses on the relationship that is built between the stakeholder and the organisation due to the practice of free trading activity. Moreover, the share of competitive advantage also multiplies for this reason thereby causing a sharp benefit for the organisation and the economy where the organisation is operating its business (Hope, V.D., Eramova, I., Capurro, D. and Donoghoe, 2014). Body The Transpacific agreement is the controversial discussion that holds the benefits as well as the disadvantages that are created due to the exercising of the free trade agreement in the countries such as Australia, Mexico, and America and so on. Therefore, as it seemed that the agreement resulted in the innovative approaches and the enhancement of the governance, competitive advantage, and reduction of poverty. However, there were certain disadvantages that were also seen to be associated with the agreement that involves the job loss of the employees and the less payment being received by the employees in the organisation (Felbermayr, G., Heid, B., Larch, M. and Yalcin, 2015). As it is witnessed that free trade is a beneficial factor that is associated with the organisation such that it helps in the building up of the competitive advantage but the loss of a job is also associated with the free trade, which tends to cause a harsh nature of the activity. Hence, the increase in the sales percentage along with the opening of new market possibility and the generation of currency are all associated with the free trading. Moreover, the economic growth of the country is also associated with the free trading. Along with the possibility of several advantages that the free trading focuses on there are certain disadvantages that are also considered in this discussion. It is seen that though there is an economic boom and there is a direct foreign exchange that takes place from the practice of free trade, at the same time, there is also a problem of unemployment that prevails with the practice of free trade (Fang, 2014). Moreover, there is the crowd of domestic industries that threaten the other multinational industries that are present in the economy. The poor working condition also prevails due to the use of free trade activity in the economy. Further, there is degradation of the natural environment, and the culture of the areas is also damaged. Furthermore, there is a reduction in the tax revenue. Hence, that could be a serious problem for the government fund. Moreover, the direct effect is caused to the local producers along with the local business that is being operated in the economy. Hence, it could be said that though there is an advantage that is related to the free trading activity, there are certain problems that keep cropping up in the economy due to the practice of free trade in the economy (Francois, et al. 2013). Therefore, it could be said that the free trade is associated with both the pros and the cons; hence, it is the economy as which one to choose for the benefit to be achieved. As it is clear from the fact that the fuller elimination of the tax and quotas tends to increased the flow of goods from one country to another, this medium helps in the obtaining of the best result for the organisation that are associated with the free trade activity. Together with this, it could be said that the good relation could be built with the stakeholders of the organisation such that both receive the benefit. As a result, there is more scope for development for the organisation along with the growth and opportunities showering its way shortly (Montalbano, P. and Nenci, 2014). On the other hand, there are many small industries, and there are many farmers cannot compete with such agribusiness, which is operating in the developed countries. Therefore, there the problem of job loss is associated with the free trade activity. On the other hand, the multinational companies would tend to relocate jobs to the emerging market countries where no proper labour protection is available to the labours. This tends to result in a poor working condition for the workers working in the industries. Therefore, it could be said that the free trade is associated with the disadvantage that could cause a serious problem for the employment of the workers who are working (Bhattacharyya, R. and Mandal, 2016). Along with the disadvantages that are associated with the free trading activities the further advantages that are also associated with the free trading is that the opening of the new market. The opening of the new market in the economy could facilitate in the obtaining of the competitive advantage that would help the organisations to receive the competitive advantage. On the other hand, there would increase the growth of the economy that would be associated with the free trading in the economy. Thus, the relation of the organisation and the stakeholders would reach a level where there would be a benefit associated along with the profit for the two. This would help the organisation in receiving the good status in the market and reach the peak level of goodwill for the coming future. On the other hand, as free trade helps in the access of latest technology and business practices hence there is more benefit that is associated with the organisation when free trade is taken into considera tion (Qianqing, W. and Fan, 2015). Conclusion It could be concluded from the above discussion that free trade stands a good source of income for the organisations. It is not only the competitive advantage that the organisation receives from the free trade activity, but the relationship between the employees and the stakeholders are also managed and are at a good stand (Neary, 2016). Moreover, it is further seen that there are both the advantages as well disadvantages that are associated with the free trade activities. The discussion shows various disadvantages and advantages that are associated with the free trading. On the other hand, the relationship between the stakeholder and the organisation also builds up it is because the free trade is associated with the competitive advantage. It is further seen that the effect of free trade would have a bad impact on the organisations that are operating because the employees would be paid less or would have to lose their job due to the agreement of free trade. Therefore, the impact of f ree trade on the employee could be a problematic situation for the economy (Eslava, M., Haltiwanger, J., Kugler, A. and Kugler, 2013). Therefore, as it is noticed that free trading facilitates dynamic business and the expansion of the new market in the economy, therefore, the profit for the organisation is multiplied. Moreover, it is not only the profit of the organisation that is multiplied, but the stakeholders of the organisation also get a good share of the profit. It is further seen that there is also some disadvantages that are connected to the free trading activities where reports are found that in America when the free trading agreement was taken into consideration the farmers had to face job loss. This resulted in the massive unemployment in the economy through the organisation and the economy was subjected to competitive advantage (Dr, A., Baccini, L. and Elsig, 2014). Ethics In Business Essays (2251 words) - Business Ethics
Ethics In Business Business Ethics Business Ethics Ethics in Business From a business perspective, working under government contracts can be a very lucrative proposition. In general, a stream of orders keep coming in, revenue increases and the company grows in the aggregate. The obvious downfalls to working in this manner is both higher quality expected as well as the extensive research and documentation required for government contracts. If a part fails to perform correctly it can cause minor glitches as well as problems that can carry serious repercussions, such as in the National Semiconductor case. When both the culpable component and company are found, the question arises of how extensive these repercussions should be. Is the company as an entity liable or do you look into individual employees within that company? From an ethical perspective one would have to look at the mitigating factors of both the employees and their superiors along with the role of others in the failure of these components. Next you would ha ve to analyze the final ruling from a corporate perspective and then we must examine the macro issue of corporate responsibility in order to attempt to find a resolution for cases like these. The first mitigating factor involved in the National Semiconductor case is the uncertainty, on the part of the employees, on the duties that they were assigned. It is plausible that during the testing procedure, an employee couldnt distinguish which parts they were to test under government standards and commercial standards. In some cases they might have even been misinformed on the final consumers of the products that they tested. In fact, ignorance on the part of the employees would fully excuse them from any moral responsibility for any damage that may result from their work. Whether it is decided that an employees is fully excused, or is given some moral responsibility, would have to be looked at on an individual basis. The second mitigating factor is the duress or threats that an employee might suffer if they do not follow through with their assignment. After the bogus testing was completed in the National Semiconductor labs, the documentation department also had to falsify documents stating that the parts had surpassed the governmental testing standards. From a legal and ethical standpoint, both the testers and the writers of the reports were merely acting as agents on direct orders from a superior. This was also the case when the plant in Singapore refused to falsify the documents and were later falsified by the employees at the have California plant before being submitted to the approval committees (Velazquez, 53). The writers of the reports were well aware of the situation yet they acted in this manner on the instruction of a supervisor. Acting in an ethical manner becomes a secondary priority in this type of environment. As stated by Alan Reder, . . . if they [the employees] feel they will suffer retribution, if they report a problem, they arent too likely to op en their mouths. (113). The workers knew that if the reports were not falsified they would come under questioning and perhaps their employment would go into jeopardy. Although working under these conditions does not fully excuse an employees from moral fault, it does start the divulging process for determining the order of the chain of command of superiors and it helps to narrow down the person or department that issued the original request for the unethical acts. The third mitigating factor is one that perhaps encompasses the majority of the employees in the National Semiconductor case. We have to balance the direct involvement that each employee had with the defective parts. Thus, it has to be made clear that many of the employees did not have a direct duty with the testing departments or with the parts that eventually failed. Even employees, or sub-contractors, that were directly involved with the production were not aware of the incompetence on the part of the testing department . For example, the electrical engineer that designed the defective computer chip could act in good faith that it would be tested to ensure that it did indeed meet the required government endurance tests. Also, for the employees that handled the

The Revolution of Digital Technology
The Revolution of Digital Technology Introduction Digital Revolution refers to the change in technology that has been going on in the last 40 years from analog technology and mechanical technology to the digital technology.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Revolution of Digital Technology specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The revolution have been characterized by rapid developments in the information technology with the computers becoming, faster, cheaper, powerful and smaller and this has information technology to be part and parcel of lives as it is embedded in almost all the products and people are adjusting very fast to the rapid pace that the information environment is changing. Other developments that have been realized as far as the revolution is concerned includes the digital television, digital democracy, gaming, mobile phone, the world wide web, online social networking, vitual communities, music and multimedia, digital divide among others. The fo llowing essay covers the issues relating to the revolution of information and the challenges that are hinder the effective revolution of digital technology. History and timeline of digital technology The invention of personal compute in the mid 20th century enhanced the invention of new technologies by converging the previous analog technology to digital format. This made it possible to make identical copies of the original and hence the ability of accessing and distributing information remotely between media. A significant development as far as the digital revolution is concerned is the transition of music from analog to recorded digital one in they early 1980s (Hoare,1998). The whole phenomenon behind digital revolution started with the invention of a transistor which in turn facilitated the invention of a microprocessor. The microprocessor saw the development of the personal computers and it was the invention of the personal computers that paved way for other digital devices that are present today. The transistor that facilitated the invention of digital computers was invented in 1947 and so the computers came onto being in the mid 1950s and it was only the government, military and the organizations that had the computer systems. As a result of digital computers invention, the World Wide Web was created.Advertising Looking for essay on computer science? The general public became familiar with the computers in the 1980s in the industrialized nations such as U.S, Geramny, France among others. Thus people bought the computers for home and business use. Many people became conversant with the computers and also many jobs were created as a result. It is also in the 1980s that the first cell phone was created by Motorola (Creeber Martin, 2008). The period between 1990s and 2000 was also characterized by significant developments in the digital era. First, the internet was released by the World Wide Web and so many businesses had the chance of advertising themselves. People from the developed nations were the first beneficiary of internet invention but the digital revolution eventually spread to the entire globe in 1990s implying that even people from the developing countries had the access to internet. The cell phone was also developed in this era but much later which had the effect of enhancing communication among people. The Social-economic Impacts of digital revolution The revolution of digital technology has had both positive as well as negative impact as far as social and economic aspects are concerned. The positive impacts of the revolution of the digital technology include the fact that it has enhanced interconnectedness among people. The interconnectedness has reduced costs and time as far as sending and receiving the information is concerned. In the past, people used to spend much money in an order to convey information (Hofstede, 1997). The digital technology has also made information to be easily accessible unlike in the past and this have resulted to great efficiency in organizations and hence enabling them to achieve their objectives. The World Wide Web has been of much assistance as it has facilitated the outsourcing by the companies and hence enhancing interaction between the companies.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Revolution of Digital Technology specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The new innovations have also brought about economic growth through globalization whereby one can even buy and sell products online without necessarily having to travel long distances in order to carry out negotiations and so everyday life of people have been made easier. Electronic commerce as a result of internet allows efficiency on the consumerââ¬â¢s prices for goods and services because middlemen which have the effect of increasing the prices are eliminated as the supplier is able to sell his or her goods directly to the consumers. The negative effects as a result of revolution of digital technology includes the fact that the companiesââ¬â¢ productivity is often reduced as employees spends much time pursuing their own interests using the digital devices that are found in the workplace e.g. playing computer games, chatting on the social network sites such as facebook and twitter, accesing emails e.t.c. The other negative impact as far as the revolution of digital technology is concerned is that there is less privacy because the information that is stored in the digital devices is susceptible to be accessed by people who were not intended to view it. Some of the information that is found in they internet for instance may not be suitable for people of all ages such as underage as it have unethical elements such as pornography e.t.c. due to the fact that organizations as well as individuals are allowed to publish any topic whatsoever to the world at large at minimal costs (World Culture Report, 1998). This has been a major concern for many parents as the students performance in schools continue to deteriorate because they spends much of their time either listening to music with their iPods, downloading music, watching movies and video clips e.t.c.instead of concentrating in their studies (Creeber Martin, 2008). There has also been an increase in frauds as far as the revolution in digital technology is concerned e.g. the cyber crime with the World Wide Web which has resulted to huge losses among the victims (Vikas, 2002).Advertising Looking for essay on computer science? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Challenges of digital revolution The path towards digital revolution has not been all smooth as it has been met with challenges and the main one being digital divide (Challoner Gribbin, 2002). The gap between those who have access to information technology and those who do not have is quite wide and this has made the revolution in digital technology not to be uniform because there are societies that continues to lag behind and resulting into digital divide. The digital divide occurs mainly in the low developed nations with many people being unaware of the current digital technologies and so the revolution process cannot be carried out effectively as the people behind revolution cannot be able to get feedback on the existing products. Another challenge that is common in the digital revolution is the rate at which the evolution takes place implying that ones digital gadgets as well as programs are always at a risk of becoming obsolete due to the revolution of more effective ones and hence a person will be required to seek for the digital devices that are currently in use which is a bit costly (Hofstede, 1997). There are also concerns about trademarks and copyrights as a result of revolution of the digital technology as consumers have resulted to duplicating the original protected works instead of purchasing the original product from the manufacturers. The music and film industry is the one that has been greatly affected by these violations. This has in turn led to the killing of the morale of the original manufacturers. The emergence of counterfeit products in the market have also made it hard for the consumers both differentiate between the original products and the fake ones and this have the effect of hindering the product innovation Conclusion The digital revolution have spurred economic growth as a result of the innovations and with the personal computers advent, information management about products, people and processes became crucial in each and every s ector of the economy. The mere convergence of communication, computing and the content enhanced the digital revolution as well as digital economy. In todayââ¬â¢s world, societies have adequate infrastructure concerning information and communication technology as revolution still continues and thus reaping benefits as a result of the advancement in technology. As competition increases in businesses, innovation is being considered as the key factor for success and so there is need to encourage the under developed nations to be innovative enough so that they can be able to compete effectively with the developed nations (Hofstede, 1997).
